In the light of the Covid-19 pandemic, most people are unbothered by the politics within the ruling ANC, a social commentator has said.
Responding to a question about the ANC Government's dependence on it's handling of the coronavirus crises, social commentator and analyst Yamkela Spengane said that South Africans are more likely to be focused on their own survival during the pandemic, rather than internal party politics within the ANC.
He said that people who perform menial tasks to gain their income on a day-to-day basis are instead looking at how the government can help them during the lockdown period. "Right now they are looking to the government - not as the 'ANC Government' but as the government of the day - to be able to help them and think how to resolve the crisis." However, the observant people "who have the luxury to sit at home and stockpile", may look at how the political situation is being handled. "We may look at how the President is unifying the factions within the ANC to fight against this virus." Spengane said it is unclear whether the party is uniting to fight off the virus or to unite as one under the leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosa. "We'll see [the truth] later on when the NGC takes place because we will realize what the factions have been planning in the two years since the election of the president in 2017." He added: "We will realize how the approach has been for the other faction - that does not back the president - and how they want to deal with the matters of the ANC unity going forward."
