Coronavirus Pandemic Could Unite SA, But Beware Of Totalitarianism That Could Follow - Analyst11/4/2020
The nationwide lockdown has revealed how the Covid-19 pandemic has managed to change the way people go about their daily lives. Social distancing has been deemed the lifesaver, hygiene has been stepped up and a technological approach has been adopted more than ever in the way business is conducted, and that leaves us wondering what impact the coronavirus will have on the political status quo of the country and the world.

Crouse says that if we take this opportunity, we will end up with a more "rational" political status quo that does not involve racialized politics. Crouse said that race based politics has been used as a "scapegoat" to face the realities of the country's issues. He says we could end up with "one that is based on true human dignity rather than on the colour of one's skin." However, Crouse warns that the coronavirus pandemic could open a way for totalitarianism to replace democracy in South Africa as civil liberties are curtailed by the lockdown.
