Scientists are warning of catastrophic conditions as a result of global warming and unpredictable climate changes.
We asked a panel of experts how individuals could combat these two closely-linked issues.
"Look at your carbon footprint and try and cut down. Think about growing food and eating less meat," was the advice of Khalid Mather, an environmental scientist at WildOceans. He added: "Engage on these platforms if you're worried about your life because your life exists on Earth." As well as calling for policy implementation on the part of government, lead environmental scientist at Khweza Environmental Consulting Nazeer Jamal emphasized the idea of small changes make big differences. "People just feel like this thing [climate change] is such a huge word and how can their small changes change anything". "I say the law of large numbers has an amazing effect on change globally. If everyone works together towards a similar goal, you're going to have success. Small changes will have the larger impact." In a profound summary, Earthlife Africa's environmental justice activist Ulrich Steenkamp said: "I would just like to say reduce, reuse, recycle and plant as much as you can. " She also added the importance of accountability. "Keep our leaders accountable and keep our businesses accountable. Shop wisely and shop environmentally friendly."
