News24 journalist Azarrah Karrim was covering the kickoff to the 21 day nationwide lockdown last Friday when she got caught in a crossfire between Police and residents in Yeoville, Johannesburg.
She was on the scene filming the incident on a nearby street, when pedestrians suddenly started running to safety after being fired on by the police.
"Suddenly, I started hearing gun shots. One of the Police started aiming his gun into a house [in which] I think one of the people on the streets had run into," she told Zahid Jadwat on this week's episode of The Special Focus. She began filming an officer who stood at the entrance of the house aiming his gun inside a property. He then noticed Karrim recording and ran towards the journalist, calling over his colleagues. "The next think I knew, he turned to me. He waved down his colleagues and they all started running after me but I only realized they were coming after me when they fired shots at me."
